Lazarus’ orphanage project is situated in a small remote village by the base of the Himalayan glaciers. It is run by Ms Bimla Thakur who dedicates her life to the service of the fifty two girl's resident there. It's a government sponsored orphanage and although the authorities do their best to provide care for the children it's nonetheless in a run down condition and there are many simple basic items which can be provided to make the girl’s life more comfortable.
For example, the area is relatively cold in the summer and below zero with heavy snowfall in the winter. It can often be cut-off from the outside world for several months at a time. The orphanage is in need of three hot water heaters as well as other basics necessities, such as warm clothing for the children, shoes, portable wood burning fires, hot water bottles, satchels, books, pens and writing paper etc..,
Lazarus gives a percentage of its profits for these necessary items and aims to also provide handlooms so the girls can have crafts skills which are indigenous to this area.
When the girls reach the age of sixteen they have to vacate the orphanage and the government tries to provide a placement for them. For example if a girl is exceptionally talented she may receive a bursary grant for further education. The good looking ones are married off and for the rest, the future is dismal and uncertain.
During Lazarus’ retreats, we stop–over in this village and for those participants who wish to join us, there is a visit to the orphanage for an afternoon tea party. Amongst other things the girls give us a performance of their sacred hymn singing; a memorable and heart opening experience for our visitors. What these children most need is love and attention and they are open and responsive to any interest shown to them.
Donations
When our retreat groups visit the orphanage there is no pressure (whatsoever) for our guest to give financial donations. In fact it's a government policy not to accept money directly given. We sincerely wish our guest to feel under no obligation in this respect. But for those who are financially able and feel the urge to donate Ms Bimla Thakur will accept practical gifts. Any financial donations given through Lazarus will be used wisely for what the girls are in need of most at any given time.
As we have said, a few hours of love and attention is something the girls will be talking about for months, if not years ahead. Part of Lazarus’ perspective involves bearing in mind that love given directly from the heart is imprinted on our souls forever, whereas materials acquirements tend to fade relatively quickly.
