A Journey along the Ganges.

On this journey we visit areas where once only Yogis and Sadhu’s lived and there are still large numbers of them there today. It was, and to a certain extent still is, the first stopping post for those leaving a worldly life to ascend the higher Himalayan regions. There are many legends and also facts regarding famous seers and saints who have lived here and even today there are a growing number of both Indian and Westerner teachers who spend extended periods teaching here.

The Ganges curves and winds through this area exposing white sandy beaches and the foothills on either side rise to a height of 1,000 feet. We will be staying in an area made famous to westerners by the Beatles visit and from where they wrote many well known songs. The ashram where they stayed is now derelict but with its forty natural caves it makes an interesting place to visit.

Many regular western visitors have commented on the atmosphere of this ancient spiritual area and have been drawn to staying for longer periods because of its special, uplifting vibration palpable in the air. This area is literally teeming with those dressed in orange robes and, coupled with its numerous ashrams, has commercially become the Yoga capital of India.

We have sole occupancy of our hotel situated by the banks of the Ganges and also there are six days of luxury camping by a nearby river where expeditions into the surrounding jungle, which tigers and elephants inhabit, is on offer plus meetings with ascetics who live in these secluded regions. White water rafting, morning yoga plus massage are available throughout.

Please note; there is no daily schedule on this journey apart from six nights in a local hotel and a further six in the jungle/river location. There are daily discussions after breakfast as to what’s on offer and to facilitate and encourage a sense of going with the flow - a native custom in this unique region.

Please see the first three pages of the ‘Lazarus Journeys’ section of this website which gives more details in relation to the overall structure and intention of our journeys.
